5 Camcorders, 5 Screens,
Size variable
The video installation Umbilical Cords deals with the form and lifetime of myths, how they arise, develop, spread and finally become incomprehensible, an abstraction. For the myth, it is not important whether it exists in artistic or material form; according to Barthes, the pure function of meaning is enough for people. A camera films a sequence of images from a metal box, which the visitor can set in motion by turning the handwheel.
Based on the position of the handwheel, she/he determines the image, which is transferred to a television, where it is filmed again and transferred to another screen. The procedure is repeated several times. The image becomes increasingly blurred until it finally appears as an abstract pixel pattern. A medium typical of the time, the television, is deliberately used.
